What can I use as an acceptable substitute for Palm Butter or where can I buy it?

I have a recipe for Moambe Stew from the Congo and it requires a cup of Palm Butter however, I have not been able to find it anywhere. Therefore, what can I use instead that will result in a similar texture and taste? Or, better yet where can I find Palm Butter? I have looked in places like Fresh Market and international food stores but I don't seem to be able to find it.

What can I use as an acceptable substitute for Palm Butter or where can I buy it?
I have been searching online for a substitute since I found some Nigerian recipes calling for it and have had no luck so far.
Reply:The only substitution I saw was on this link. However getting the ingredients looked pretty hard to get as well.

What type of palm trees grow best in the desert sun of Arizona?

Specifically I'm looking to put short palm trees on my front lawn, probably no higher than 6-7 feet. And want to know what types of palms work best in direct sunlight all day. Just to give me some options.

What type of palm trees grow best in the desert sun of Arizona?
do you know what USDA zone you're in?

for sure you can grow california desert palms (washingtonia filifera) but they're gonna get a heckuva lot bigger than 6 or 7 feet.

dwarf palmettos are probably going to be hardy enough for you, though they're more common in the southeast where it's wetter.

phoenix robellini is a dwarf date palm that doesn't get much bigger than 7 or 8 feet but they're not very cold tolerant. if it dips below freezing for long periods of time, you'll probably have to protect it or it'll go belly up.

How do I know if my palm tree is dead?

I planted a precious palm tree in the summer. It was doing great! Now that it is cold and icy I've noticed that it is turning brown but it is still standing. Should I take it out or give it a chance?

How do I know if my palm tree is dead?
[WiseBonza is correct]

You don't have to wait to find out whether alive or.....

Simply use your fingernail [or carefully, with a knife edge] to Lightly scrape the outside skin of your Palm's trunk.

If you see Green, it's alive.
Reply:Give it a chance. as the leaves get older, they fall to the sides and turn brown. You can remove those. If it has no green leaves, then it may be dead, but palm trees are tough, so wait until spring to be sure.
Reply:no , give it a chance . you'll it's dead if new fronds don't appear from the centre ( and time won't allow you to determine this ; i.e they can be real slow particularly in the dormant period of winter )

it takes a bit to kill off a palm , and unless you've got palm borer in your plant ( which in all honesty , in your neck of the woods , are beyond remote possibility ) indeed I'd be a monkeys uncle if there is anything wrong with your palm proper .

but like anything , anything is possible , but if you are thinking of

spraying the palm , do not , absolutely not spray with white oil , you will lose it for sure and certain . p.s did you buy it from a nursery or a supermarket ? reason i ask is that plants grown under certain conditions and then end up in air - conditioning , find themselves adapting to those conditions , and vice - versa .

it does have an affect

my advice is hang in there and wait and watch . good luck .
Reply:You did not say where you live.

Palm tree do not grow naturally where there is frost.

On Palm trees, when the heart of the palm, the place where new fronds sprout is injured, like in a hurricane, the palm will die.

I imagine when frost kills the heart of the palm it will also die.

If after planting the tree did not get enough water for the roots to establish themselves, the fronds will turn brown.
Reply:I would find the newest emerging frond and tie a colored string at the base of it. Check to see if the string moves upward. I'd leave it alone until spring.

p.s. Some palms DO survive in temperate climates. I live in zone 6 and I have 3 varieties: Mediterranean windmill palm, needle palm and saw palmetto. They are in protected spots, but they survive.

Others can be used (with luck!) as die-back perrenials, like Chinese fan palm.
Reply:The leaves are going to die off for winter, but the trunk is where the life is at. If the trunk is alive, then the tree is okay. My guess is it's okay.

If it's not a thick trunked palm, then you can scratch the trunk. If it's still green inside, it is alive.

Good luck.
Reply:i'd cut it back, and wait till next summer to see what happens. palm's are for tropical climates. next time you might want to cover it with a blanket or something to try to hold in every bit of heat that you can
Reply:Palm trees normally live year round do they not? And in proper weather conditions (eg islands) they dont die. I have not seena ny of my palm trees die where do you live canada?rofl?

What brands of lotion are out there that do not contain any palm oil?

I love lotion, for hands, face and body. I refuse to stop using it. I just want to find ones that are better for the environment and more specifically do not contain palm oil. Ones available in Canada would be most ideal. Thanks!

What brands of lotion are out there that do not contain any palm oil?
This seems painfully obvious, but... why not read the labels when you're purchasing lotion next time???
Reply:That is a really stupid answer. In addition to reading labels before I make purchases I am also looking for palm oil free products that others have used and can recommend. Report It

Reply:I am aware that Lush is working to get their products palm oil free, as well as free of other nasties as well. They've got a soap based on sunflower, rapeseed and coconut oils. It seems to be rather hard to make soap cheaply without palm oil. I don't know anything about their lotions or hand creams, but from their own marketing, they seem to work along the same philosophy, if not the same set of ingredients.

How do you trim a queen palm?

My husband and I just bought a house that has a nice queen palm out front. The outer fronds are mostly brown and dead, but the newer growth is nice and green. We're assuming we just need to trim the older fronds. What is the best way to do this? Is there some special technique that's needed? Do we cut them all the way down to the base? Any help is appreciated!

How do you trim a queen palm?
Just cut them off... As close to the trunk as possible
Reply:Your local County Extension Horticulture Agent will be able to help you. County extension offices are a valuable resource especially if you are new to the area and need landscape advice. Search for: Your state Cooperative Extension (i.e.Texas Cooperative Extension) and then look for the link to county offices to find your local county agents.

Good luck

How do I dig up a Palm Tree in my backyard?

The palm tree is fairly young...only 12 feet high. It was 4.5 feet high when planted 8 years ago by the previous home owner. I need to replant it so I can put an above ground pool in my backyard.

How do I dig up a Palm Tree in my backyard?
If you want to transplant it(12 feet by yourself? ) you'll need to dig your new hole first for transplanting. You'll need to start digging all the way around the trunk aboout 1 foot away. Then try to dig underneath the palm until it rocks. Try to get as much dirt with the roots as you can when you dig it up. That will make it's transition easier. You might need a helper or a dolly(handtruck)to transfer it to it's new home. Plop it in it's new hole and add some compost. You might need to stake it for awhile in case it's windy.

And I would only transplant it if it has sentimental value or is a rare palm. In SoCal, palms are a "dime a dozen" and come up in the cracks in the sidewalk.

Good luck :-)

How do I plant a SAGO PALM SEED?

I have recently got a few (4) Sago Palm Plant Seeds. I am not sure how to really plant them if someone could help me out, i dont know if it is suppose to be the tip pointed up or down.

How do I plant a SAGO PALM SEED?
The seeds germinate easily with two tricks. Seed orientation is not important. You have to be sure to remove all of the pulp from the seeds (which may already have been done), then soak the seeds for two or three days, changing the water daily. There are germination inhibitors in the pulp which will leach out in the water. Then you need to scarify or nick the seeds. On one end of a seed, using a sharp knife, cut a piece of the seed coat off of the seed. The seed will not germinate until the seed coat rots enough to allow water to enter the seed. As you will see, sagos have very hard seed coats, so this happens slowly without nicking the seed. I germinated some last year and just planted nice full gallon pots a couple of weeks ago. I think it took about a month for the seeds to germinate in warm weather.
Reply:Tip up,but soak them overnight in warm water, then plant in a mix of potting soil, sand, and vermiculite(for outdoors) or perilite.Don't put any fertiliser in them, they won't need it for a few years.

Where is the best spot to plant a Majesty Palm?

I live in south Louisiana and I just bought this Majesty Palm. On the tag from Wal-mart its states that it should be planted in total shade. I have looked up this palm online and everywheres I went said Full Sun. So which one is it?

Where is the best spot to plant a Majesty Palm?
This palm requres almost total shade when it is young, plant where, as young, it is in total shade, but as it grows, it head will 'poke through' and start getting sun. It slowly grows to a full sun palm, but NOT when it is young. Same with King palms.

Palm Centro- How do i put downloaded videos on it from limewire?
Palm Centro only acknowledges a few programs. PRC or PDB applications. If you have the Palm Centro manual. Check pages 78-80. The problem with adding programs to this phone is that this phone is very sensitive. I have one and I put ringtones on there because it recognizes MP3 formats. Unfortunately it kept other functions from working such as my camera and video camera so I had to take it off. I even put it on a micro sd card and it still gave me the same problems. You might want to be careful in putting anything on your phone if you can't put it on there from the phone company's website.
Reply:Limewire is NOT illegal, I dont know how many times I have to argue this point!

Anyway, if your Palm is from sprint, load the sprint Music manager, and load it with the MP3's.
Reply:you have to go to everythingtreo.com in the free software section, there is something callled... tcmpt.. or something to the effect... That will allow you to watch video

i have to agree.....READ THE MANUAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Palm applications on an sd card have to be in the correct subdirectory for palmos to recognize them. IF you format an sd card on the phone, It should create the directories. I think the prc and pdb files need to be in a subdirectory called Palm, and media files go into a directory named "DCIM".

Alternatley, you can use a sync cable and Palm Quick install.
Reply:two ways...

HOTSYNCING.....

-plug cradle/sync cable into treo (tr), plug other end of cable into your PC via USB

-install Palm Desktop and its Hotsync application onto PC

-unzip all PRC and PDB files to be installed (in the Palm tech world, PRCs are mostly the executable programs while PDB files are extra files/resources that some PRC files may use). Many devs will include instructions on what to install in more complex cases.

-double click files to be installed. It should open up an open with windows. By double clicking those files or dragging and dropping the files into those windows, they'll be queued for installation next time you hit the hotysnc button.

-I don't know what Treo's use, but on my Tungsten T3, it's called QuickInstall and there's one window to install to handheld and another to the SD card

THROUGH A CARD READER

-all PRC and PDB files go here.

%26lt;root%26gt;\Palm\Launcher

keep in mind that some apps with PDB files are fickle. They may only run when its PRC, PDB, both, or some specific combo of them are on handheld memory and NOT the expansion card. Refer to dev's instructions on this, or also experiment.

I recommend using a freeware app called FileZ. It's a file manager for pOS (Palm OS) that lets u copy/move files around within the card and even betw the handheld and SD card

while we're at this....

all pics/images go here

All mp3 files and other audio files go here

How to cut down a palm tree?

Palm tree is guessed at 20 feet tall. In close proximity to house (5-8feet) and neighboring fences(5-8feet). I need to get rid of it and I want to do it myself with help from neighbors//friends. Where do we start and how do we finish? Should we cut off all of the fans before we attempt anything? What should we use to get the main trunk out? What do we do to the roots; do we grind or do we remove?

How to cut down a palm tree?
I just had one removed because I didn't want to, and it was approx the same height.

Two people, One with a chain saw, the other holding a rope that had been secured near the fronds, one cutting, one stabilizing pulling. 10 minutes the tree was down, cut to manageable lengths to load and carted away, and no mess, no damage.

Certainly you should enlist neighbors, and if the tree is to fall over a sidewalk or street access, the job should be accomplished asap.

Once it's down cut the FANS, and certainly cut the stump as low to ground level as possible. Grinding after, works, Digging is tedious and labor intensive, AND in some measure depends on the BREED of Palm. I've lived in FL for 36 years and have only one that spread like CRAB GRASS, a FISH TAIL,,,most others are more a TAP ROOT , similar to PINE, and can be cut or ground UNDER and that will kill them, though as they die you may have to FILL for a time as the trunk and roots decompose.

TREES in a general sense underground can take years to decompose, and you may have to monitor that,,,BUT once any seed pods and the tree are removed, it's unlikely you'll see "babies" sprouting.

Steven Wolf

Just my two "sense"
Reply:I have cut down three palms, up to 25 feet tall. Started by removing the fronds, then cut slices off, starting at the top. I cut them small enough to go in the fireplace. Palm retains moisture for almost forever. Even when a couple of years old, I could squeeze water out of a fresh cut.

I cut down to ground level. Since I have ice plant, I just left it until the ice plant covered it. When you get down to almost ground level, the wood gets so tough you wouldn't believe it. It dulls a chain saw very quickly.

BTW I was able to do it alone at the age of 75
Reply:the only way to cut down a palm tree is with a [ hand saw ] get it,,,lol lol lol
Reply:These suckers are heavy and 20' is respectable and what with other property nearby, this will have to be sectioned off in stages.

Typically, a small pie cut is made on the side the direction is desired. It is cut about 1/4 of the way through and another made diagonally to it on the same side. This is called a pie cut. It is done in a manor so as not to allow the tree to bind on the saw blade as the weight displacement gravitates toward the area you are cutting.

After this and insuring no one is in the way, the final cut is done on the back side (opposite the side where the pie cut is) about two or so inches above the center of the pie cut.

IF you think you need, you can use a rope and affix to the top of the tree to help guide it down when it starts to let go...

You can rent a stump grinder and turn the rest into good mulch...

If you are not experience, I would suggest hiring someone like me who knows by experience...

Don't forget eye, ear and head protection too ;-) No shorts, sneakers or sandles either

The tips of my indoor Palm Tree are turning brown..what is happening?

The tips of my Palm Tree are turning brown. Someone told me to clip that portion off, now the clipped portion is turning brown. What is happening?

The tips of my indoor Palm Tree are turning brown..what is happening?
Clipping off the tips is OK, you need to clip them t the angles that they were before not straight across, it is a living plant, make sure that you let it get light, you may also need to re pot it, sometimes the roots get to tangled up and need to be re-potted. If you want to keep the same container, you can pull it out and trim all the SMALL roots making sure that you leave the thickest roots alone, they are established and fine. Another thing you may want to try is getting a small dowel or stick and push it into the soil, this lets the soil have air and the water go all the way through 6 10 whole poked through the soil to the bottom. It is like the circulatory system, all needs to circulate.
Reply:Usually the reason a plants tips are turning brown is there is not enough humidity in the air. Especially a tropical plant. think about where palms come from and it is usually a balmy tropical place. So the best thing would be to mist it 3-5 times a week and water once a week.
Reply:Symptom of uneven watering.

How do people keep their palm trees alive in the winter?

I was driving through the rich section of town and I saw that there was a house that had big tall palm trees all around it. I have no idea how it's possible for them to survive the winter. What do they do to keep them alive?

How do people keep their palm trees alive in the winter?
I cannot be 100% sure but I would presume that they mulch around the trunk with hay/pine starw etcetera..The same as I do my banana trees here in north west Florida... Our palm trees here need no mulch but wee do get weather a couple days in the teens, and about 2 weeks of in the 20's..Not near as much cold weather as tennesee..As i say posibbly see if they have mulch around the trunks...Again, Me not totally knoqwledgeble of your weather..this is just my speculation..knowing that alot of tropical or semi tropical plants will survive in colder weathers as long as the roots are kept from freezing..
Reply:I have about 10 Queen Palms in my yard in Central California, most of my neighbors have palms as well. I never see anyone do anything to protect the larger ones, however, my friend told me the other day that my new Pygmy palms would need to be covered in burlap to survive the winter.
Reply:Keeping a palm tree alive through winter? Most definitely sounds like a problem for people more affluent than me, thank God.

Where can I buy palm oil, coconut oil, or palm kernel oil?

The Save-on-Foods closest to my house carries Dulhan brand coconut oil 500 mL and it is quite hard and almost waxy/flaky. I believe it may be hydrogenated. What I would like to know is where I can purchase a larger quantity of this (maybe a few liters), preferably in a store, but if not, online. In other words, I don't want the health industry's extra virgin coconut oil; I want the coconut oil shortening. Also, where (again, preferably in a store) can I find palm and palm kernel oil? Thanks a bunch.

Where can I buy palm oil, coconut oil, or palm kernel oil?
Any Indian or Thai grocery store will carry all of these in larger quantites. Also, some brands of coconut oil do have the tendency to be hard and waxy when at room temp. Check the ingredients to see if it is hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated. When it hits the heat, it will melt.

The "Dulhan" brand is definitely an Indian brand, it actually means "bride".

You can do a Yahoo/Google search for non hydrogenated coconut oils:

What is the correct way to take care of a Majesty palm indoor plant?

I got a majesty palm plant for my apt. i need know the way to take of it. i hear that they are difficult plants. how much water and sun light does it need. and fertilizer

What is the correct way to take care of a Majesty palm indoor plant?
Palms are a high light demand plant. Pick the sunniest window you have and set it as close to the glass as you can. Do not transplant it into some poorly draining container. Palms actually do not mind being very rootbound. If you want to put it into a pretty container, get one big enough that you can set the grow pot inside it along with a saucer. DO NOT OVERWATER! It will need to be thoroughly watered, but it cannot take standing water. You can get around this by setting something as a spacer in the bottom of the containter, in the saucer and allow the water to run out of the grow pot and into the saucer, but the palm is not sitting in it.

You can take the whole thing out of the deco container and give it a good drink in a tub and then set it back where it goes after it has finished draining. Plain old water soluble fertilizer like Peter's, etc. is fine. Osmocote or some other slow-release is fine too. Watch for spider mites and mealybugs. A little daily misting when it is hot is a good method of suppressing spidermites. Have fun, palms are really not that hard provided they get enough light.
Reply:I have one that I keep in my bedroom in front of the window during the winter. It starts to yellow some, when the fronds dry up, I cut it off, more are always growing. I use plant food spikes %26amp; they work well. After frost is over, in may, I put it outside on my patipo where it gets good light, but not direct sun, %26amp; it grows like a weed til first frost. Then it goes back in the house. Inside I water every 1-2 weeks. Outside, 2-3 times a week when it's really hot.

Can I sell my sago palm tree?

Do you think a nursery would buy my 20 ft. sago palm? It is fully mature and grows baby trees on the trunk. If so what would be a good price?

Can I sell my sago palm tree?
I don't think a nursery would buy it, but you might find someone to buy it on www.craigslist.org or something.
Reply:Put the word out, someone will be glad to get it. I buy my sago "cycads" in Florida. My source charges 125$ per foot of wood not including the top leafy part. That's wholsale! You have a heavy tree but some people can rent equipment to excavate it and move it to they're yard.
Reply:I would contact a tree moving service to see if they might be interested in the tree. They may know someone who needs a large tree. You would get more if it is easily accessible and in good health. Also check with local nurseries and landscapers. You might find someone who wants the tree, just don't expect top dollar.
Reply:Call your local nursery and ask them. A 20 ft sago is quite a palm and with all the construction landscapers are always looking for nice trees. To check the price call a nursery and tell them you are interested in buying one and could they give you an approximate price. ;)

Good Luck!
Reply:A nursery may buy it. But don't know if you would get a fair price for it from them. Remember, they would have to resale it, and would be trying to make all they could off of the sale.. Try putting an advertisement in the Garden section or plants for sale section of a newspaper near your town. Alot of Landscapers may be willing to pay a little cash for it to plant in a clients landscape. Or you may get a homeowner looking to spruce up his yard who would be willing to take it off your hands.. As far as price goes, I have no Idea. Try calling a large nursery who handles stock in palm trees to get an idea of how much they are going for. Let them know you are wondering how much a 20 ft. palm would go for retail. This should give you an idea of what would be a fair price to let it go for.. Hope this answers your question..

PS.... If I was looking for a palm, I would take it off your hands..lol. Good luck!

What is a good liquid fertilizer for an indoor potted date palm?

I have a 1 foot pygmy date palm in a container, indoors.

What is a good liquid fertilizer, and how often should I apply it?

What is a good liquid fertilizer for an indoor potted date palm?
Hey Dis,

Be sure not to use anything with more Nitrogen than potassium and phosphates. Epsom Salts should be diluted according to instructions for use as a fertilizer to give Magnesium and Manganese, will help keep it green and healthy.

Then alternate next month with some Palm Saver. Push a screw driver down in the edge of the pot, at about 6 places equally distant from each other - put the recommended amount in the holes, not on the surface. This is not liquid either.

So, careful not to exceed the recommended amounts, alternate months with those applications. Be sure to water so that water comes out the bottom - this will flush the salts that the plant excretes out the bottom.

Why are the palm trees so tall in L.A.? How do they not fall over with being so tall and skinny?

I have been to several "palm tree" places and I have never seen palm trees as high as they are here. are they are certain type of palm tree?

Why are the palm trees so tall in L.A.? How do they not fall over with being so tall and skinny?
Palms are not actually a tree. They are a grass. That is why you see all the life at the top and nothing on the sides. When you cut down a palm, the outside is dead and the inside is alive, just the opposite of a tree. The inside is made up of thousands of continuous straws of fiber that carry the water to the top for use by the living part. They are very flexible due to this fibrous straw system. They also have a very extensive root system that extends up to twice the height of the tree outward in all directions as far the ground will allow. Palm tree roots are the same as the straws inside, thousands of small roots like you see in you grassy lawn. They only go down about 3 to 4 feet but spread way out to collect water. This is why you see pictures of hurricanes and everything is blowing away but the palm trees. The average growth for the California variety is about 6" to 1' per year. The Washingtonian variety can grow 1 to 4 feet per year but do not have the big diameter trunk that the Californians do. Hope this helps

Palmtree MD
Reply:They are skinny because they are Washingtonians, and the reason they are so tall, is because they were planted long ago...

Sometimes they do fall over, so be careful!

How much sun is needed for my palm tree?

I bought a majesty palm a few weeks ago, it is about 4 feet tall and has wide shoots. I have it on my back patio where there is barely any sun during the day. It seems to be fine there. I wish I had it in my front yard though.

My front yard, recieves no direct sun until about 1 pm and then the sun leaves at about 6. However if I put my palm tree there, I am worried that it will have heat stress. What do you think? Is it okay to put it there, eventhough the area recieves about 5 hours of direct sunlight + 90 degree heat?

How much sun is needed for my palm tree?
I have a large (approx 15 ft. to the top of the fronds) date palm in my front yard, it practically has full sun all day and it is hot and humid here with mild winter (below freezing for maybe a couple of weeks a year). It has a corner of the yard to itself, the ground is slightly raised so there is no standing water. I don't think one would thrive like that in my shady backyard, however I have several nice sago palms there. The more sun, the more you should water your palm. It may need fertilizer and/or epsom salts.
Reply:There a lot in our neighborhood but the ones that get only a little sun grow very slowly. There are many in full sun.
Reply:majesty palms are beautiful tree's try to keep her in the back where you have her, you see if that tree was in the jungle she would be under the canopy of larger one's, providing shade. i know because i use to sell them in my store, and let me tell you i killed enough of them to know what i am talking about. but now am almost a pro in palms
Reply:Most palm trees need at least 8 hours of sunlight to grow. without the sun many trees will not grow.
Reply:I had palm trees out in my yard, away from the house , winter killed them, the one near the house gets the sun till about 12 noon its still ok, lasted thru the winter to, think the winds and cold killed them, the front yard seems to get the most heat, I think you'll be ok, make hole double the size of the pot, I think palms can be beautiful, Joy

I have a Palm Treo, and can only set different ringtones if I assign them into my one button contacts list. I am thinking about replacing my Treo with a Centro. Can I do this in a Centro without having to assign them to my one button contacts?

Can you set different ringtones for different callers in a Palm Centro?
I don't think I unserstand your question. You can assign a different ringer on the Centro for each caller, including one for Unknown, privite, or restricted calls, and one for when you are roaming.
Reply:yes, you can. I havn't figured out how to yet though.

I have an 11 years old dates palm in my garden. Will it bear fruits here in the tropical Philippines?

Will dates palm bear fruits in tropical asian country like the Philippines? I have one that is 11 years old, it's planted from seed I brought from fruits when I worked in Saudi Arabia. My family loves eating dates and hopes that our dates palm tree bear fruits one day.

I have an 11 years old dates palm in my garden. Will it bear fruits here in the tropical Philippines?
I remember date palms along the road in Alabang started to bear fruit one summer. but it was a particularly dry summer that year. so I guess it is possible if the weather is dry enough.
Reply:yeah, I think so, beacuse philippines has a good warm weather too, goodluck! ;)

How far down does palm tree roots go down?

Since palm trees don't fall over when storms come into S FL, I was wondering how far there roots go down and how do they not fall over.

How far down does palm tree roots go down?
This tree is a root surface plant. Its roots only go down about 6 feet at most because of the salt in the soil. Hope this helps.

Is there anyway to control a cell phone with a Palm Tungsten?

I have a Motorola E815 and a Palm Tungsten. Is there anyway that I can use my Palm as a controller for my phone? (eg. Phone lock, turn off). I have already connected my phone to my palm, but I can't find any software that can control the phone.

Is there anyway to control a cell phone with a Palm Tungsten?
No, not that I've ever seen.

The primary purpose of the connection you've got is for dialing or going online with the Tungsten via the phone. I've never come across any phone control interface for PalmOS.

What makes a sago palm's fronds fall flat to the ground?

I replanted a good size sago palm from my backyard to my front yard. After about 3 days, the fronds were flat on the ground. What caused this and will they come up again? They are still green.

What makes a sago palm's fronds fall flat to the ground?
The plant has suffered a bit of transplant shock.

Water and fertilize, if you haven't already and it will recover in time.
Reply:Water your plant with any seaweed fertiliser. This will reduce the transplant shock and makes your plant healthier and stronger.

How much space is needed to install a fully grown palm tree?

I have an area in my backyard that is about 3 feet X 4 feet and it would be perfect for a palm tree (the tree would sit right over my jacuzzi). The area just has decorative gravel right now. I live in Vegas, so palm trees thrive here. Can I have a palm tree put in with that amount of space?

How much space is needed to install a fully grown palm tree?
A Palm would be perfect for this location. Palm have relatively small root balls, especially when you consider their size----most will grow to over 50 feet. They are ideal to have around pools and hot tubs because they do not drop leaves and a very clean plant. One final bonus---as your palm grows they can be highlighted very effectively with low voltage lights.

I would check with a GOOD nursery in Lost Wages about which palms will perform best in the desert. There are dozens and dozens of different species and a palm that would thrive in Hawaii, could get fried under your desert sun in July. At a minimum buy a palm in a 5 gallon container---or go larger if your budget can handle it. When you plant it---you need to dig a hole twice the size of the palms current root ball, Right now---in the early spring---is an ideal time to plant a new palm. Good luck!
Reply:I would guess about 6 feet in al directions, but I'm not possitive. Call your local home depot or lowes. They could tell you.

What is the difference between a King palm and a Royal palm?

I live in Florida and I am doing research on palm trees and I am unclear on the differences between these two trees. I have found two that look alike except for their seeds. One had small berries about 1 cm, and were about 40 feet tall, and another variety with sees about 3 cm that were about 10 feet tall. The one with the bigger seeds were green or brown on the tree, and I have found a few on the grown that were an orange like colour. The trunck on both of them were brown most of the way up then turns green.

What is the difference between a King palm and a Royal palm?
Here's a link to many different palms and their sci. names:

http://www.fairchildgarden.org/palmguide...

also on the same link, on the left hand side navigation area, do a palm search - put in each name "king" and "royal" and it will give you some pictures and info.

Hope that helps...
Reply:the royal palm tree blums on mothers day each year and it has red berries on it, its absolutely beath taking. the king palm tree i never heard of.
Reply:The King Palm is scientifically known as Archontophoenix cunninghamiana. It is from Australia and is a very popular lansape tree in this country. The Royal Palm is from the Tropics (Cuba, Honduras) and is scientifically know as Roystonea regia.

The trees require different temperatures and culture.

Palms are quite diverse and their study can be quite fascinating.

Why did you not include the Queen Palm in your study?

How do you trim palm tree bark?

How do you trim the lower branches on a palm tree? Does trimming the lower branches off make it taller and healthier? Is there a special tool that helps cut them close to the tree?

How do you trim palm tree bark?
You probably don't want to trim the bark itself.

Trimming green fronds very close to the tree risks killing the tree, because that's where the tender growth bud is. Once you cut into this, insects and diseases will find it. If you want to get rid of the very last bits of frond, wait until they've been weathered a bit, and then pull them off by hand.

Trimming the lower, brown fronds doesn't seem to change the height or straightness of the tree. The lowest fronds might pull right off by hand. For the rest, a small chainsaw is good, if you have strong protection for your eyes and nose. You will need this protection because the brown fronds are very soft and fragile and will produce lots of dust and flying chips. A pruning saw will also work, if you are patient, and will save you the grief of flying frondbits. Either way, you will need to wear fairly heavy clothing and some strong gloves, because a falling frond with thorns on it will rip your unprotected skin pretty good.

Leaving lots of fronds on your palm after they turn brown is an invitation for squirrels and rats to set up shop. But hawks and owls that dine on the rats and squirrels, and which I happen to think are awesome critters, will also like to nest in these. It depends on whether you are in an already treed neighborhood that would support the rats and squirrels anyways.

Leaving too few green fronds will kill the tree, although mexican palms have strong constitutions and I have seen some that have survived having only one or two left. Municipalities here in California that plant grown palms typically have bought them with only four or so fronds on, all bound up by wire. This rough treatment results in about a 1 in 6 kill rate, based on my observations.

The neighborhood where I grew up in was landscaped in mexican palms and the city would prune them at various yearly intervals depending on that year's budget. 5 years' worth of brown fronds is too long an interval, 2 to 3 years' is good.

Brown fronds make excellent kindling. They burn very very fast, so not so good for an already established fire as you will likely send burning charcoals up the flue.
Reply:put chocolate on them and the limbs will eventually fall off.
Reply:i use a pruning saw, machette or secataurs.

do it whenever you want, and as hard as you want just dont cut the central leaf off.
Reply:use a chainsaw

How can I not kill my indoor palm?

No matter what I do I kill palms! What can I do better, what lighting/water intake does a palm need? Help is much appreciated, Thanks!

How can I not kill my indoor palm?
I'm bad with plants, but the palm I inherited is thriving after six years, so maybe I'm onto something.

It's in full sun part of the day even in winter, near a window whose blinds I almost never close. Since palms are desert plants, I only water it every other time when I give my plants their weekly watering.

FWIW, I mixed sand into the potting soil the one time I repotted it, about one part sand to every three or four parts soil. It seemed like I didn't want to use regular potting soil 'straight,' since it might encourage damp roots. I've killed my share of cacti that way! (And probably your share, too.)
Reply:For one thing you might try getting them some more direct sunlight. It is a palm after all and they are not really "indoor" plants. This is the primary cause of plants like palms anf ficus trees not doing well indoors. They start them outdoors, get them ready for sale outdoors and you buy them and take them home to the indoors. As far as I know there are no real "indoor" plants. If you bring them indoors you have to find a way to allow them the "nature" they need to survive.
Reply:the more you move your plant the more stress you put on it since its indoors, so find a spot that has plenty of sun and jsut keep there dont move it, since its a palm, you dont want to over water it

Can you keep palm fronds green once you remove them from the plant?

I'm going to put a layer of palm fronds on my tiki bar roof and i wondered if there was a way to keep them green. If not, no problem, but would be cool if i could.

Can you keep palm fronds green once you remove them from the plant?
Unfortunately, once the leaf is severed from the tree, his green days are numbered. Your idea sounds great, but two things come to mind:

Plastic leaves (which will stay nice and green) will cost an arm and a leg.

Don't be tempted to spray paint the leaves. This will create a potential fire hazard, and the risk outweighs the benefit.

Have you seen the new Carraba's where they actually have live plants on the roof? It would be cool to incorporate at least a small part of this idea into your roof system. (Maybe a couple of concealed pots with live palms)

What can you tell me about palm springs?

My hubby, myself, teen son and his teen girlfriend will be going to a wedding in palm springs. We need to find a hotel that we can all stay together. I can only spend $100.00 per night on the hotel and we need the hotel for 2 nights. Also What is there for teens to do in palm springs in the evening for entertainment? Most of us adults want to go out to the casinos, but we want all of the teen children to have a great time too. This whole trip is kind of stressing me out!

What can you tell me about palm springs?
Depending on the time of year, it can be gorgeous or misserable. The summers are very hot. Last year it got to 126 when I was there.

On Thursday nights there is a big street fair known as "Village Fest". Definately, worth attending.

Palm Springs as a town is a blend of:

Gays and Lesbians

Old Retired folks

and

Illegal aliens who work for the hotels and casinos

Sounds kind of curt and terse but it is very true.

There is a great mall in Palm Desert that is good for hours and a big iMax theater, if they are 18 they can go to the hooka bar on Palm Canyon and smoke hookas.

Look on-line for hotels in PS, Palm Desert, Indian Wells (expensive), or Rancho Mirage, not Desert Hot Springs or Yucca Valley. Find one with a pool, that should be easy. Better yet stay in downtown Palm Springs so your kids can walk around.

Best wishes and feel free to drop me an e-mail if you want to talk more about Palm Springs.
Reply:It's full of old people as it's "the" place to retire, apparently.
Reply:there's a movie theater not far from down town casinos...just walking up and down the main drag seems to be popular with kids...don't be shocked by all the pickle smokers...they are every where....

How does a palm nailer work?

i just recently saw a palm nailer at a tool store but have never seen one in action. How do they work and are they effective tools? What are their pros and cons?

How does a palm nailer work?
Palm nailers are used when you need to nail something where the larger air nailers and hammers won't fit. the palm nailers use just about any type of nail. The palm nailer works like a hammer drill, or impact driver, you place the nail head into the steel shaft and place the nail tip against the wood , when you apply pressure to the palm nailer, the inner part of the shaft moves up and down hammering the nail into the wood. You will feel no vibration, movement etc it's just noisey.

Pro's fit's in tight spaces, uses most nails. inexpensive (costs same as good hammer) quicker than hand nailing.

Con's. shoots one nail at a time nails often fall out before using it., nails often go in crooked, time consuming

Palm Nailer owner and User.

PS!!!! Palm Nailers DO need a compressor!!!! to run them
Reply:it is a simple tool you put the tip of the nailer on the head of the nail and the vibration drives the nail.con is the vibration is hard on the hands, pros it is easier than a hammer.
Reply:They work great! The one I used was pneumatic. (maybe a con) if you do not own a compressor. You can drive nails without ever missing the head. No bent nails. Most folks if they are not carpenters have problems driving large nails after a few. With a palm nailer you can drive them all day long. Also you will not hit anything with the hammer. like siding or walls right next to the where you want to drive the nail. Probably best for large nails. It also drives them fast. I was really impressed. Again the negative is the cost for the compressor and the nailer. Hammers are cheap and without a cord.
Reply:i use my palm lailer mostly for teco nails it works great. they have a magnet to hold the nail when the magnet is depresed a small hampster inside hits the magnet with his hammer and that drives the nail dont worry you dont have to feed the hampster

How do I start getting internet service on my palm pilot TX?

I don't want to have to go to a hotspot everytime I want to use my palm pilot for the internet.

How do I start getting internet service on my palm pilot TX?
T|X uses Bluetooth v1.1 and a WiFi (802.11b), so those are your 2 angles to internet access. I've read somewhere that u can go online using Infrared, but with BT, it just isn't worth the hassle of IR

I just know the basics, so unfortunately, i cna't go into any detail. I have pointed out some questions u'd wanna ask a tech person should u decide to go through with this

.

short of going to a hotspot, you can create your own hotspot.. If u have internet access at home or the office, u can buy a router does wireless. The T|X uses the B (802.11) standard, but older laptops roughly around up to 5 years ago either support G standard built in or through a USB add-on card. N is the very newest. If you were to get a B router, that would ensure compatibility, but wouldn't be too helpful if u got a more modern laptop. Even if said laptop were backwards compatible with the B standard, u'd want at least G on your laptop.

AFAIK, the wireless routers with G standard should be backwards compatible with B standard. If this were so, u'd be able to get it for your T|X, and kill another bird with the same stone since u'd have wifi access for your laptop should u decide to get one. Just be sure to follow safety precautions with WL routers like setting up a password, and possibly encrption and firewall settings on the router.

.

For BT, u'd need a BT compatible cellphone. You'll want to ask if BT cellphones u have/r intersted in work with your T|X's BT version 1.1. Then u could get internet from your cellphone's radio/cell WL stream and transfer taht data to your T|X via BT. Getting internet through most cellphones is expensive, so be sure to get a data plan to get the best bang for your buck

They are always trying to look more beautiful than one another, it's L.A. right? I know these things, I grew up there.

How to use palm leaves in beach inspired bedroom?

We are painting our bedroom a beachy shade of blue green with summer/beach decor. I work at Big Lots and they have single palm leaves and I thought they would be cute.. if only I could find a use for them in the room.... Any ideas?

How to use palm leaves in beach inspired bedroom?
Put them standing up, in a cool container

or

Cover a piece of plywood with a cool fabric, then attach the palm leaves to it, for a unique piece of artwork
Reply:You could hang them over the window as curtains (that'd look really cool)

you could paint a palm tree in the background and glue real leave on the top to make part of it look 3-d

You could use it to make some type of design above the desk/bed/etc.

Be creative! This is a time when you should really talk with people and ask for their ideas. It'll prompt your brain into good ideas as well!

Good luck,

Tiff

How do I paint bark on palm trees, coconuts, and the leaves of a palm tree?

Really random, I know, but I'm making my mom a palm tree out of cardboard for mother's day, since she wanted a tropical plant, I plan on like painting hte bark and everything, but how do i go about doing this? So i looks some what realistic? Ideas.

How do I paint bark on palm trees, coconuts, and the leaves of a palm tree?
I would take strips of brown paper and do tree bark rubbings, then paste them on the cardboard. If it seems too messy, perhaps find images of tree bark, print them for reference and paste them on the cardboard, and paint over it.

I think it's really sweet that you're doing this for your mom. Good luck!!

Can I use palm tree leaves to make a hide for my Leopard Gecko?

I know you can't use anything with cedar or pine, but I have all these great dry palm leaves and bark that I think would make a perfect hid box for her. Thanks!

Can I use palm tree leaves to make a hide for my Leopard Gecko?
It wouldn't hurt to have them in with her as long as you have moist peat moss inside for her so that she can shed properly. My gecko is a little picky, so i had to give him a cave and a little palm tree to lay under. So if you choose to use the palm leaves offer another hid at the other end of the tank and let her choose which she likes.
Reply:you could, it won't hurt him, but leopard geckos are a desert species not a tropical species, so it rely isn't natural for him.
Reply:It would be better to just buy a hide box or make one out of a ptastic container with a hole cut in it.
Reply:I wouldn't, I'd buy a hiding place for him.

When is the best time to fertilize my queen palm tree?

I't been planted for close to a year now. It's about twelve feet high. The guy at the palm nursey suggested that I use a "triple 15" fertilizer, which I have...but I'm not sure how often I am supposed to be using it.

Thanks!

When is the best time to fertilize my queen palm tree?
If it is in a plant spike then just drive it into the soil a couple of feet from the base of the plant. If it is a dry fertilizer then sprinkle some around the base and water it in good. Not watering it in could burn the plants roots. Do not use more than a large handful and wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards really good.

Is there a breed of palm tree that I can grow in New Jersey?

I noticed at the Jersey Shore a few places have successfully grown a few palm trees. I was wondering if there is a hardy variety of Palm Tree which can grow in climates that are moderately cold with even the rare snowfall??? Our climate in NJ is not so snowy anymore, we have one or two snowfalls a year and that's it.

Is there a breed of palm tree that I can grow in New Jersey?
YES THERE IS.

needle palms need NO protection at all. they are cold hardy to -2 F without protection. here are a few photos of them

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showima...

the WINDMILL PALM is cold hardy to 5 F with some damage. put some bubble wrap to protect the trunk in the coldest periods of cold. also a plastic bag to cover the crown when a heavy snow is predicted is wise.

here are some photos

also the mazari palm. this is cold hardy to zero, and the drier it is the more cold hardy.

IN ATLANTIC CITY

the palms in atlantic city are replaced every year. those are queen palms and would need lots of protection to survive in NJ

GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!
Reply:Hey King John,

I would tend to agree with the first answer, except that the Palmetto Palm does tolerate down to 15 degrees, as we got that cold in South Carolina (Myrtle Beach) about 3 or 4 times this year.

If you did plant a palmetto palm, the key would be to get it into the ground early spring. Put some christmas lights or heating cords around the trunk in the coldest days of the winter. You may find this will keep it alive.
Reply:No. There are one or two varieties that can tolerate light frosts, and one that's supposed to survive down to 25 degrees...but that won't cut it for a typical New Jersey winter. I bet it's gotten down to 25 or below several times just this year, right?

Best you could do is have on in a large pot, and move it inside for the winter.
