I was driving through the rich section of town and I saw that there was a house that had big tall palm trees all around it. I have no idea how it's possible for them to survive the winter. What do they do to keep them alive?
How do people keep their palm trees alive in the winter?
I cannot be 100% sure but I would presume that they mulch around the trunk with hay/pine starw etcetera..The same as I do my banana trees here in north west Florida... Our palm trees here need no mulch but wee do get weather a couple days in the teens, and about 2 weeks of in the 20's..Not near as much cold weather as tennesee..As i say posibbly see if they have mulch around the trunks...Again, Me not totally knoqwledgeble of your weather..this is just my speculation..knowing that alot of tropical or semi tropical plants will survive in colder weathers as long as the roots are kept from freezing..
Reply:I have about 10 Queen Palms in my yard in Central California, most of my neighbors have palms as well. I never see anyone do anything to protect the larger ones, however, my friend told me the other day that my new Pygmy palms would need to be covered in burlap to survive the winter.
Reply:Keeping a palm tree alive through winter? Most definitely sounds like a problem for people more affluent than me, thank God.
