Why do they paint the bottoms of some palm trees white?

I saw a row of palm trees in Miami, painted white on the bottom.Why is this?

Why do they paint the bottoms of some palm trees white?
I think that all trees were whitewashed white back in the years of the early automobile so the drivers could see them at night-- their headlights were no better than candles. Then as headlights got better-- the owners decided they like the white trunks on their property.


Oh-- whitewash was also used as a insect deterrent-- applied thickly it filled those cracks/holes in the bark. AND one more reason-- the whitewash prevented bark burn from the sun.

Reply:Try contacting the Miami Grounds Keepers to ask them. I think they paint them to keep them from freezing in the winter. The paint keeps the moisture out of the base of the tree and therefore keeps the moisture from freezing and causing the trunk to break open and then falling over.
Reply:It stops certain kinds of bugs from climbing up tree and eating, boring, and/or damaging tree.
