I know palm trees look great, but are they a hassle to maintain?

I have a new home and am thinking about some palm trees. Someone told me that its expensive to keep them looking nice. What do you think?

many different kinds of palms, but all do require some attention to keep them looking their best. most grow quickly out of the reach of most homeowners so to keep looking good you'll need to hire a professional tree service for maintenance every couple of years. unmaintained palms, (especially mex. fan palms) attract rats who love to nest in the dead fronds. the bigger they get the harder %26amp; more expensive they are to remove.other critters, mostly rodents are attracted to the bundles of "fruit" they tend to put out each year. try a pigmy version. small, cute %26amp; easy for average homeowner to maintain. suggest you wear gloves while removing dead fronds from most palms. the spines can be pretty sharp. contact your local county coop extension service for good, free local advise.
Reply:Try red palm or McArthur palms. They r simply great. All u need to do is cut off the excess shoots that come out. It'll take care of itself. Therefore very little or no maintenance.
Reply:I have some in my house.I live in NY.I just water them %26amp; they keep on growing.They wilt when I put them outside in the direct sunlight.Indoors they grow towards the skylight window but are not in direct sunlight.
Reply:Well, It depends on where you are located. If you live way down south where it never gets cold. They will do fine. But if you live somewhere that it does get cold, then you will have to winterize them by cutting back some and putting a wind barrier around them filled with some kind of mulch type stuff to keep them from freezing. and then uncover come spring.. Good Luck and God Bless {:-) %26lt;%26gt;%26lt;
