I was surprised to learn while living in Florida, that all the beautiful palm trees were not native to that State.
In what country did palm trees originate?
Palms originate from many areas of the world, including Africa, Asia, Pacific islands, the Amazon and North America. You can find many interesting links, books, pictures, etc. at the International Palm Society web site [http://www.palms.org/].
There are several native palms to North America, including:
Cabbage Palm
Sabal palmetto or Livistona chinensis
Height: 40-50 feet (12-15 meters)
Spread: 15-25 feet (4.5-7.6 meters)
Leaf: 36 inches or longer (%26gt;91 cm)
Range: Native to North America (USDA Hardiness Zones 8B through 11- Florida; Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona and Nevada; coastal California, Oregon and Washington)
Paurotis Palm
Acoelorrhaphe wrightii
Height: 15-25 feet (4.5-7.6 meters)
Spread: 10-15 feet (3.0-4.5 meters)
Leaf: 18-36 inches (45-91 cm)
Range: Native to North America. (USDA Hardiness Zones 10 through 11 - southern Florida, southern Arizona and southern coastal California.); Widespread, North America, SE Mexico, West Indies, Central America, and N South America (Colombia--Isla de Providencia).
Royal Palm
Roystonea spp.
Height: 50-80 feet (15-24 meters)
Spread: 15-25 feet (4.5-7.5 meters)
Leaf: 18-36 inches (46-91 cm)
Range: Native to North America (USDA Hardiness Zones 10 through 11 - central and southern Florida, southern California)
Serenoa repens
Serenoa, with a single polymorphic species, is endemic to the southeastern United States. It grows in a variety of habitats and communities including pine flatwoods, sand-pine scrub, and coastal sand dunes. It sometimes occurs in vast stands nearly excluding all other understory shrubs.
Washingtonia filifera
This is my favorite, the palm found in the palm canyon oasis in the Anza-Borrego desert - one of my favorite day hikes. I've included a few photo-links below - enjoy!
Washingtonia robusta
The two species are easy to distinguish when cultivated side by side, but they are sometimes difficult to identify from herbarium specimens. Analysis of flavonoid content can reliably distinguish the two species.
Rhapidophyllum hystrix
Rhapidophyllum is a genus endemic to the southeastern United States. It is most closely related to Trachycarpus H. Wendland of the Himalayan region of southeastern Asia (N. W. Uhl and J. Dransfield 1987).
Thatch palm
Hemithrinax Hooker f.
From regions along shores, North America (Florida), Mexico, West Indies (Bahamas), and Central America.
Also, as you noted, there are numerous palms introduced into the US from all over the world - as expected for a delightful groups of trees. Several have 'naturalized' over the last 200 years.
Hope this helps...
Reply:The exact origin of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is considered to be lost in Antiquity. However, it is certain that the date palm was cultivated as early as 4000 B.C. since it was used for the construction of the temple of the moon god near Ur in Southern Iraq - Mesopotamia (Popenoe, 1913; 1973).
Reply:Palms are a very large group of trees. There are native palms all around the world in tropical and tempereate environments. A palm that is native to Florida is the trunkless palm which some people call palmettos. There are three subspecies in Florida.
Reply:The famous Date palm comes from Africa, the Coconut palm has traveled all over the tropics connected to the Ocean and the famous Southern California palm was used by the native indians for food after the small seeds are ground up.
The Age of Cycads preceeded the palm but have palmlike leaves. They also were distributed world wide and were also in Florida. Many of the Cycads faced extinction, like Florida Palms also face extinction due to palm diseases. Enjoy the palms while you can, hopefully they will find a way to prevent some of the palm diseases.
